4-H General Use County Endowments

Donors are a critical part of ensuring the success of 4-H programming across Oregon. By partnering with the Oregon 4-H Foundation, donors create a lasting legacy in their communities through endowments.

4-H General Use County endowments provide comfort, security and added support for local 4-H educators who otherwise wouldn’t have it. For example, Benton County 4-H’s endowment has supported awards banquets, ambassador promotions and a student worker position for more than a decade. Carolyn Ashton, associate professor, 4-H youth development, shared, “With an office staff of three people, this endowment and its support of a student worker helps us better serve our county and community in ways we otherwise wouldn’t have the resources for.”

In total, 12 counties (Tillamook, Multnomah, Polk, Benton, Linn, Deschutes, Wasco, Umatilla, Curry, Josephine, and Klamath) have general use endowments. 25 counties do not have this same level of support.

These county endowments not only sustain current 4-H programming but also fund innovative ideas. With the flexibility this funding provides, program leaders have more resources at their disposal to help 4-H youth dream even bigger.

“Extra funds to use in our county have been instrumental in piloting new and innovative programs, said Ashton “This year, we were able to launch a biosecurity awareness game — a creative way to increase awareness and improve best practices throughout Benton County. The program will also expand to serve Oregon statewide, and potentially even nationwide.”

“Do it. You won’t be sorry,” Ashton added for those who are considering this type of county support. “People will be so grateful for your impact. You have the opportunity to impact generations of 4-H families.”

These endowments are stewarded by the Oregon 4-H Foundation and begin at $50,000. Pledge payments can be arranged over several years. An endowment can also be included in a will as part of an estate plan. Once funded, endowment revenue begins cycling back into the county each year for versatile spending and program support – just like in Benton County.
